American actress Meghan Markle and the United Kingdom’s Prince Harry are preparing to get married in May, but if Markle has her way, the wedding will be anything but traditional.
Daily Mail reported that much to the dismay of Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the traditional royal family, Markle and Harry have let it be known that they intend to “do things their way.” One of the main breaks of tradition that they want is for Markle to be walked down the aisle by her mother, Doria Ragland. This came as a surprise to many given the fact that Markle’s father is still very much alive.
“I’ve heard that Meghan wants her mother to walk her down the aisle, which would be a sweet moment,” said a source close to the couple. “While they will always be mindful of traditions and the views of their elders, the day of the wedding itself will certainly hold a few unconventional surprises. Don’t expect a royal wedding by numbers. They want to involve their friends and family in as much as possible throughout the day.”
Markle being walked down the aisle by her mother would be a major break from tradition, as Kate, Diana and Sophie Wessex were all accompanied by their father. It would also be another shot at her father, who was already hurt when Prince Harry described the royal family as the “family that Markle never had.”
“She’s had a really good family,” said Markle’s brother, Thomas Markle Jr. “We were as close as we could be, as tight as we could be, that’s what we were. We’d get together on Christmases, on holidays, on birthdays, on Thanksgivings… It was always somewhere, even though we lived in different parts of the city [Los Angeles] – we still all got together. Obviously, she had a family. She was very privileged. She got everything she ever wanted. We did the best that we could in terms of getting together for holidays and whatnot.”
“My father will be extremely hurt, actually,” he continued. “He dedicated the majority of all his time and everything to her. He made sure she had what she needed to be successful and get to where she’s at today.”
