Amid uncertainty around program, more companies are turning DACA-protected applicants away

But it’s only “contentious” because the impeached president is making it that way, even pissing off a federal judge earlier this month after the administration claimed that the Supreme Court’s decision ruling that it illegally ended the program had “no basis in law.” A Justice Department attorney walked back that claim in ongoing court proceedings, but then lied by claiming that the administration is obeying the top court’s ruling to fully reopen the program to new applicants.

So it’s no surprise, then, that in the midst of all this government-created chaos and uncertainty, more and more DACA recipients are getting unfairly turned away from prospective job opportunities due to their immigration status. Some good news, however, is that court proceedings over this are in process.

“A federal judge has ruled that a class-action lawsuit filed by DACA recipients challenging Procter & Gamble’s discriminatory hiring practice will move to trial,” Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) said in June. “The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment that the company’s hiring practices are unlawful, back pay and damages, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.”

But remember none of this has to be happening at all. The administration could just leave the policy alone and support legislation passed by the House over a year ago that would put DACA recipients onto a path to citizenship. You know, put some teeth behind Trump’s claim that he has “a love for these people.” Instead, Trump has continued to vow to end the program, getting an eager “[w]e are on it at @DHSgov Mr. President!” from unlawfully appointed DHS official Ken Cuccinelli.

Just not right now, though. Some of the people around Trump seem to have a glimmer of understanding that moving to again end the successful program before the November election wouldn’t look so great for them. So they’re likely waiting to try again until after the election. And if he wins, they will try again. In the meantime, it’s young immigrants and their families who continue to suffer.
